Demon Slayer / Kimetsu no Yaiba has taken the world by storm and is one of the most popular anime franchises currently. Upon losing his family to demons who killed them, Tanjiro Kamado swears vengeance and sets out on a quest to destroy the demons. He joins a sword wielding attack group called the Demon Slayer Corps, who hunts and kills the demons who murders innocent humans after sundown.
Demon hunting is not an easy achievement. The incredibly evil beings launch deadly attacks and can only be killed in very few ways, one of it being exposing them to sunlight. This is why the swords used by demon slayers, called Nichirin blades, are manufactured in such a way that they go through extended exposure to sunlight.
What Are Nichirin Blades?
Nichirin Blades are made up of a special steel that is used by a Demon Slayer to kill demons. The blade consists of scarlet crimson iron sand and scarlet crimson ore, and it is found and collected from the mountains.
But the material cannot be collected from any mountain. It can only be taken from those mountains that are above the clouds, so that they are covered in sunlight through the year without any interference from rains or having the sun blocked.
A distinct feature of the swords is that the blades change colours according to the owners that pick them for the first time. Each colour represents certain characteristics, such as the personality of the wielder and the power assumed by the demon slayer.
In order to know what each colour represents, we have provided a description of the different sword colours that the Demon Slayers wield:
Various Sword Colours in Demon Slayer
The Red Nichirin blade symbolizes flame, and is wielded by the eccentric and amazingly charismatic Kyojuro Rengoku. His sense of morals and burning passion for killing demons translates well with the intensity of the colour red.
Kyojuro’s blade colour takes the form of a unique pattern, wherein a flame motif runs down his blade. The Breath of flames gives out some increasing visuals too.
The Grey Nichirin blade is wielded by Gyomei Himejima, who is the Stone Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. It represents stone, which symbolizes the strong and sturdy personality of Gyomei, who is the strongest member of the corps. He is soft-spoken and gentle, but his presence is intimidating.
Gyomei uses the blade on a hand-ax, which is attached to a spiked ball through a long chain. His weapon is unique, as even though forged with the same ore, the weapon was made through a superior technique.
The Indigo-Grey Nichirin blade represents the beast, and therefore it is appropriately held by Inosuke Hashibira, who is a boar head donning demon slayer. The character wields two swords, and the blades have tagged edges too, which goes on to make a messy situation out of the demon slaying business, like how a beast would do it.
His proud and short tempered personality makes him efficient to take on enemies stronger than him. Hashibira lived in the mountains and that is where he developed the Breath of the Beast technique and his beast-like qualities.
The Amber blade is wielded by Tengen Uzui and represents sound. It is used by slayers with a heightened sense of hearing, and the sound breathing technique can be used to confuse enemies with noise. Tengen uses his amber blade in a cleaver like handheld weapon called Kusarigama.
The Nichirin blade that symbolizes wind and wielded by Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Green blade. He has a twisted personality that is boisterous and cyclonic, ust like his powers of bringing tornado-like sword attacks on the demons.
The Breathing of the green blade is also what inspired many of the other techniques.
The Yellow Nichirin blade represents thunder and the primary slayer who wields it is Zenitsu Agatsuma. Although he seems cowardly and scared, his true strength comes out explosively when the situation calls for it.
In comparison with other swords, Zenitsu’s blade is unique in that a lightning bolt motif forms down through the end of the sword.
7. Light Pink
The Light Pink Nichirin blade is used by the demon slayer sisters Kanao Tsuyuri and Kanae Kocho. The colour represents the Flower and the sisters have developed a shared Breathing style.
The Pink Nichirin blade is wielded by Mitsuri Kanroji and has the Love Breathing style, which is unique because it was developed by Mitsuri herself. Due to this, only she can use this style, when combined with the unique constitution of her body. She is agile, flexible and is the fastest member of the demon slayers.
Mitsuri is cheerful and passionate, and is emotional towards people who she deals with.
Lavender represents the serpent, and so the sword wielded by Obanai Iguro resembles the body of a snake. The technique of the blade represents the movement of the snake, and the Serpent Breathing is derived from the Water Breathing.
The Purple Nichirin blade is held by one of the primary antagonists, Kokushibou. The purple blade represents the Moon. Through the use of some obscure techniques, Moon Breathing was enhanced from the Sun Breathing.
The Blue Nichirin blade represents water and is one of the primary sword colours to be first introduced. It is held by Giyu Tomioka, and the use of Breath of Water style makes him a powerful force among the demon slayers.
Giyu’s fighting style resembles the ocean very much. It is fluid and smooth, but is deadly and does the damage effortlessly.
The White Nichirin blade symbolizes mist. It is wielded by the demon slayer Muichiro Tokito, and the Breath of Mist style is derived from Breath of Wind. Muichiro is known for his calm and distant personality, often being lost in thoughts, which makes him the best fit for the Breath of Mist style.
The Black Nichirin blade is the mysterious one out of all the colours, and is the sword colour that is held by the main character Tanjiro Kamado. Although the symbolism of black blade is said to be unknown, some say that the blade represents the Sun. Black is perceived to be the combination of all colours.
The black blade has a bit of prejudice and ill beliefs surrounding it, as the wielders of black blade are rare due to their tendency to not live long.
