9 Best Kuudere Characters In Anime | What is Kuudere?

Kuudere is one of the dere types an anime/manga slang term for a character that is cold, blunt, cynical, and pretty much doesn’t care if her beloved dies. That’s what she is on the outside but she is actually caring and nice on the inside. It differs from tsundere since tsundere is when the character frequently runs hot and cold between tsun and dere. Kuudere is when the character only occasionally shows her caring side.

Kuuderes often speak in a calm and collective manner and seem unaffected by the world around them. They never show any kind of emotion at all happiness, sadness, or they get angry or annoyed. Some characters may even seem completely emotionless they seem like they lack empathy. Though they act serious on the outside, they often have a very good, sarcastic sense of humor.

They may open up and show their soft, caring side to people whom they trust. Kuudere people don’t tend to be labeled as unsocial, timid, and shy, instead, they’re cool and reserved.

    Kuudere Characters in Anime

    Mei Misaki from Another

A mysterious and isolated girl in Yomiyama North Middle School’s third year’s third class. Her left eye is covered by an eye patch. The girl with a mysterious presence and is always sketching alone. She is labelled as the one that “does not exist.” It’s no surprise Mei Misaki is emotionless, considering her entire class ignores her! But they have a good reason-they think she’s cursed! Like Rei, this kuudere has red eyes and a quiet demeanor.

Tobiichi Origami from Date A Live

Origami Tobiichi is one of the main female characters of the Date A Live series. She is a highly intelligent classmate of Shido who is athletic, “beautiful”, and the most famous person in Shido’s school. Tobiichi rarely speaks to anyone. It can’t be said that she is shy but rather than that she prefers not to talk. Usually alone and minding her own business, she conducts her daily affairs – hunting Spirits.

Mashiro Shiina from Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

Mashiro is the female protagonist of the story. She is a world famous artist who transferred into Suiko as a second-year to learn how to draw manga. Although her artworks are widely admired by the world in spite of her young age, she knows nothing other than drawing, and has an extreme lack of common sense and living ability.

Due to this, Sorata is forced to handle Mashiro’s living chores, to the point that he even has to pick out underwear for her, or she will go out without them. She is quiet and doesn’t seem to have a care (or deep thought) in the world. But looks can be deceiving because as the series progresses and this young girl begins to truly bloom, she shows a completely different side of herself that no one could have ever known existed.

Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion

Ayanami Rei is the “First Children” of the Marduk Report and the pilot of EVA-00. Shrouded in mystery, she is socially withdrawn and rarely shows emotion. Seemingly completely devoted to her duty as an EVA pilot, her only apparent human relationship being with Nerv commander Ikari Gendou. One of the most popular kuudere characters is our favorite blue-haired beauty, Ayanami Rei. Her skills for piloting are so perfect, you’d think she was an emotionless machine, detached and withdrawn. However, her soft spot for Shinji beautifully portrays her caring nature.

Rei is one of the defining characters of the kuudere archetype, being one of the older and most well-known characters.

Koneko Toujou from High School DxD

A 10th-grade student. Born as Shirone, Koneko is a young Nekomata who is part of a rare species among her kind, called the Nekoshou. After losing her parents, she and her older sister, Kuroka, were later taken in by an unnamed Devil who reincarnated her sister as one of the members of his peerage. Koneko rarely shows any form of emotion and prefers to carry out her task independently.

Possessing a sharp tongue, Even when speaking, it is shown that she is quick to lash out. Apparently, they do not get along well with each other. However, when it comes down to resolving the trouble, Koneko always places her comrades first before herself. Eventually, she also notes that Issei is a respected character and even got along with him.

Mikasa Ackerman from Shingeki no Kyojin

Mikasa is Eren’s adoptive sister and mutual childhood friend of Armin. Mikasa shares an unbreakable bond with Eren following events in their past, and rushes to protect him whenever he is in danger. Mikasa possesses impressive fighting skill and strength even as a child. Sometimes, characters can be mixes of different deres. Some think Mikasa is more yandere than kuudere, but she’s cool-headed enough, especially initially in the series, to count. Mikasa wasn’t always this way, but childhood trauma and growing up in a world surrounded by titans can change a girl. She’s a cool, fierce warrior, but she’ll do anything for her brother Eren.

    Saber from Fate/Stay Night

She is Shirou’s Servant, an agile but powerful warrior. Loyal, independent, and reserved, Saber acts coldly but is actually suppressing her emotions to focus on her goals. Her class is considered the “Most Outstanding,” with excellent ratings in all categories. Since her Master cannot effectively provide her with mana, she minimizes her activity to preserve what she has.

She is strong, silent, and will cut through her enemies before they know what hits them. But Saber is fighting for good, every swing of her sword is put into motion by a gentle ray of hope. An ultimate warrior and an ultimate woman. Can you say she is Kuudere?

    Tachibana Kanade from Angel Beats!

Tenshi is the nickname the SSS gives her based on Yuri’s belief that she must be a representative of god. Tenshi is one of the two main female characters of the anime. Her name means “Angel,” though she has stated she isn’t one.

The main plot of the anime revolves around her rivalry with Yuri, as Tenshi is believed to be the enemy of the Afterlife. Tenshi was the subject of much discussion amongst the protagonists. They are unable to discern if she is a sentient being or simply a programme that was initiated by the world.

That is how well Tenshi mask her emotions and feelings simply for the sake of protecting everyone else, and how well she fits the kuudere type. A bona fide kuudere, we simply must rank her as 2.

Ruri Gokou from Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai

Ruri Gokou perhaps better known as her alter-ego Kuroneko (“Black Cat”)—is a member of the altogether, Otaku Girls online community that Saori manages. She goes to an offline meet-up where she meets both Saori and Kirino in person.

Like Kirino, she remains aloof during this meeting, and it isn’t until after the meeting at Saori’s post-gathering that she is formally introduced. Ruri Gokou is one of the most endearing Kuudere girls out there. She is seen as socially awkward and snobbish, but when it comes to her siblings and close friends, her gentle aura truly shines!
