After the success of RWBY, Rooster Teeth is trying to expand their anime-inspired animation work with Gen Lock. First debut on their streaming platform Rooster Teeth FIRST, Gen Lock has been moved over by their parent company Warner Media to HBO Max. Now, with Gen Lock Season 2 on the horizon, a lot of fans are wondering whether the show will return, and massively improve for its second season run.
Well, you don’t have to be a super-soldier riding a mecha to know about the information pertaining to Gen Lock Season 2, we will tell you everything you need to know about Gen Lock Season 2!
Will there be Gen Lock Season 2?
Yes! The show was renewed for a second season on October 24, 2019. And will premiere on HBO Max for the first 90 days before being released on Rooster Teeth for FIRST members. The show’s second season will premiere on HBO Max (Raised by Wolves Season 3) on November 4, 2021, and on Rooster Teeth FIRST 90 days later, on February 2, 2022.
This is a mix up from the previous release where Rooster Teeth FIRST members get the show first, before it lands to HBO Max. But with the change of hands in distribution and funding it makes sense that the show is landing on HBO Max first rather than Rooster Teeth’s.
And the good news is the first trailer for Gen Lock Season 2 has been released! Rooster Teeth also released the first few minutes of Gen Lock Season 2 available to watch on Youtube.
This is certainly good news as even though critics praised the story and voice acting, many still found the animations to be lacking compared to various advancements in 3DCG anime that many Japanese studios have done. So fans and audiences alike are expecting that Gen Lock Season 2 will see further improvements and refinements in the animation with HBO Max more deep-pocketed funding.
And you don’t have to subscribe to Rooster Teeth FIRST if you haven’t watched the first season of Gen Lock, you can watch Gen Lock Season 1 on HBO Max!
What’s the story for Gen Lock Season 2?
The trailer shows us that the Gen Lock is being considered outdated and being replaced by AI (or is it?) controlled mecha. And according to the official synopsis for Gen Lock Season 2, we will see pilot Julian Chase reappears from the grave in the shape of a Holon warrior. One of a few whose consciousness is compatible with the mech-suit GEN:LOCK program, the Polity and the Union remained entrenched in a cruel and unforgiving war.
Furthermore, the rapid environmental collapse happening raised the stakes not just for The Union or The Polity, but the entire humanity as the remaining Gen Lock has to fight for whatever’s left of humanity.
While Dr. Weller concentrates on cracking the gen:LOCK code, Chase, Miranda, Cammie, and their gang of Polity warriors must resist the authoritarian Union. But as the conflict drags on, Chase must determine if he’s willing to give up everything – including his friends, family, and humanity. To preserve a world that is becoming increasingly hostile.
At the end of Season 1, we see the fighters from both The Union and The Polity joining forces to save whatever’s left of humanity but it seems another party has an interest pertaining to Gen Lock fighters that might be used against humanity and everyone in the show.
We are yet to learn who this faction is but it is also heavily implied in the trailer so we expect that we will learn more about the evil mysterious faction in Gen Lock Season 2.
Who will be in Gen Lock Season 2?
Even though the show has changed hands, save to say that the contracts for all the cast hasn’t changed and nobody’s being replaced. That means that Michael B. Jordan will return to his role as Julian Chase and so does everyone else such as that Maisie Williams as Cameron ‘Cammie’ MacCloud, and Kōichi Yamadera as Kazu Iida. Also, we will be having Golshifteh Farahani as Yasamin ‘Yaz’ Madrani, Asia Kate Dillon as Valentina ‘Val’ Romanyszyn, and many others on the show.
