It seems like the old classic teenage drama Grease will return, with its upcoming prequel spinoff series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paramount+ has greenlit the show. Originally set up at HBO Max in 2019, the show initially has the title Grease: Rydell High. Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will consist of 10 episodes.
Based on a 1971 musical with the same name, the original movie Grease was released in 1978 and starred John Travolta as Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson. In the original movie, it follows the story of high-school romance in 1950s between Danny and Sandy. There is the sequel for this as well, called Grease 2. And now, they come up with—not a movie—but a TV series, called Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
So basically, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will be the prequel, and will set four years before the original movie Grease. Although we can assume that it will involve the four Pink Ladies from the movie, this series is reported will have a whole new characters instead.
The showrunner of this spinoff series—who will also write and executively produce it—will be Annabel Oakes (who is also writer and producer of Atypical). Marty Bowen will also executively produce via Temple Hill, while Erik Feig will executive produce via Picturestart.
So when will we see this spinoff series? What will it be about? And who will play in it? Here is what we know so far about the upcoming TV show, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
Grease: Rise of The Pink Ladies—Release Date
Fans who are very excited to hear the news should feel relieved, since they won’t have to wait too long to see Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. The production process can be underway. And if everything runs smoothly and the filming process can be done in late 2021 or early 2022, we can expect to see the TV series on our screen in mid or late 2022.
But until then, we still have to wait for the announcement of official release date, or at least the official teaser and trailer to be released.
Grease: Rise of The Pink Ladies—What is It About?
Since it is reported that Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will take place four years before the event in the original movie Grease, we can predict that the show will transport back to Rydell High in 1954. So it will basically happen “before rock n’ roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up, outcast girls dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever”.
This spinoff may talk about the first generation of the group of Pink Ladies in Rydell High—the predecessor of the Pink Ladies in Grease (Rizzo, Frenchie, Marty, and Jan). We probably can also find out the origin and the rise of the guy violent gang led by Danny Zuko in Grease, called T-Birds.
So, pretty much Grease: Rise of The Pink Ladies will give us the backstory of Grease and things that haven’t been much discussed previously.
Grease: Rise of The Pink Ladies—Who Will Play in It?
