You know, in most cases, you can already tell if a certain anime is weird by only looking at the premise, and Mysterious Girlfriend X is clearly a prime example in that matter. A high school boy decides on a whim to taste a drop of his girl classmate’s drool when she’s asleep? Surely any anime on the same page couldn’t get any weirder than that. But what’s surprising is that, despite being entitled as one of the weirdest romance shows, Mysterious Girlfriend X is actually a great show once you have watched enough of it. It’s one of those anime where you should watch at least more than one episode to fully enjoy what it has to offer.
The anime adaptation is based on a manga under the same title written and illustrated by Riichi Ueshiba. The manga series was originally published as a one-shot story in 2004, but it soon became a serialized manga in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine in 2006. Six years later, an anime adaptation of the manga came out and is said to be produced by Hoods Entertainment, the studio that is most known for Drifters, The Qwaser of Stigmata, and Real Girl.

The first season of Mysterious Girlfriend X was aired in Spring 2012 from April 8, 2012, to July 1, 2012. It was followed by an OVA episode by the name of Mysterious Girlfriend X: A Mysterious Summer Festival on August 23, 2012. Many of the fans are craving for a second season of Mysterious Girlfriend X after the OVA has come to an end. So, will there be Mysterious Girlfriend X Season 2?
As of now, we haven’t received any information regarding Mysterious Girlfriend X Season 2 from the author nor the studio. It is not easy to speculate the release date of it, as in the anime community, anything could happen. To put it into perspective, the anime The Devil is a Part-Timer, which was released 8 years ago, gets a season renewal early this year. So, although the chances are low, let’s just hope that it might also be the case for Mysterious Girlfriend X.
The only thing that can be confirmed right now is that the source material is more than enough for any studio to go for a season renewal of Mysterious Girlfriend X. The first season has covered around 36 chapters from the manga series, while the manga series itself is finished with 96 chapters.
All in all, despite having a low chance, Mysterious Girlfriend X Season 2 might be possible, but its release date still remains a mystery. If there is an announcement for a second season, let’s say in 2022, then expect Mysterious Girlfriend X Season 2 to be aired sometime around 2023.
What to expect for the plot of Mysterious Girlfriend X Season 2!
One day during lunchtime at school, Tsubaki learns from Ueno that he has seen Urabe ( supposedly ) violently attack someone with a high kick at a train station platform. Surprised to hear something like that, Tsubaki has troubling and somber thoughts about that, unable to believe that Urabe would actually attack someone in that way. After school, Tsubaki meets who he thinks is “Urabe” in a magazine shop, and he begins talking to her. However, this “Urabe” at first doesn’t recognize him or even know his own name. And while her behavior seems a little weird to Tsubaki, he simply overlooks that and takes her on their daily route to their homes. But when it finally comes time to do their traditional drool routine, “Urabe” becomes horrified and attacks Tsubaki with a high kick.
As Tsubaki falls into unconsciousness, the Real Urabe appears and tries to go on the offense with this fake “Urabe”. However, as both Urabes are about to engage each other, they realize that they both have the same face; and the lookalike “Urabe” introduces herself to the actual Urabe (the real one); she introduces herself as Momoka Imai, the singing idol.

Mysterious Girlfriend X Action
The story follows Mikoto Urabe, a 16-year-old girl who takes the word ‘mysterious’ to another level, even to the point where it’s becoming weird. She always carries scissors in her panties, she always sleeps in class, and she doesn’t have anyone that she can call a friend. But none of that can compare to what happens when a boy from his class named Akira Tsubaki decides on a whim to have a taste of Urabe’s drool when she’s asleep.
After that unexpected moment, things have never been the same as before, and as time goes on, Urabe slowly becomes Akira’s mysterious girlfriend.
