Dororo is an action historical anime that was released in 2019. The adaptation was a collaboration work between 2 animation studios, MAPPA and Tezuka Productions. MAPPA is a prominent studio who has worked on some of the biggest anime out there, such as Jujutsu Kaisen and the final season of the Attack on Titan series. Whilst Tezuka Productions is an anime studio that is founded by the creator of Dororo Osamu Tezuka. The two studios have also collaborated once in the past in 2012, adapting the anime titled Kids on the Slope.
The anime was first aired on Japanese television on January 7, 2019, and its final episode was aired on June 24 of the same year. The anime has 24 episodes in total and is licensed by Sentai Filmworks. There was also a 26-episode Dororo anime adaptation back in 1969, which was by Mushi Production. A short pilot for the 1969 version of Dororo was released the year before in 1968, simply titled Dororo Pilot.
Dororo was originally a manga series that was written and illustrated by the renowned manga artist, Osamu Tezuka. He is most well-known for his work titled Astro Boy, which earned him the title “The Godfather of Manga”. The Dororo manga was serialized by Shounen Sunday from August 9, 1967 until July 3, 1968. The manga has a total of 4 volumes.
Recently, there was also a remake manga of the franchise. It is titled The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru, and the art is done by Satoshi Shiki. It started its publication on October 19, 2018 in Akita Shoten’s Champion Red and is currently still ongoing.
Dororo Season 2 Release Date
Currently, there is no news from neither MAPPA nor Tezuka Productions about Dororo Season 2. Fans have been demanding for a sequel ever since the first season finished airing, however It is uncertain whether or not the anime will ever get a renewal.
There are slight differences with the manga. There are a total of 48 demons, whilst the 2019 version of the anime only showed 12 of the demons. However, the anime has already wrapped up the story, ending with Hyakkimaru gaining back all of his body parts. There is already a proper ending to the story.
Moreover, the anime also has covered most of the entire manga. Therefore, there needs to be more material for the studios to be able to create Dororo Season 2. Considering the fact that its creator has already passed away, it is very unlikely that fans will get Dororo Season 2, which tells the continuation of the story.
The Plot of Dororo
The story of Dororo centered around the journey of Hyakkimaru. He is the first-born of Lord Daigo Kagemitsu. However, due to the greed of his father, Hyakkimaru ended up being a sacrifice to 12 demons. In the end, he was born with no limbs, no nose, no eyes, no ears and no skin, yet somehow he still lives.
After being abandoned, he was picked up by a man who gave him prosthetics and raised him. The man taught Hyakkimaru how to survive and fight for himself. Hyakkimaru then went on a journey to defeat the demons who took away his body parts. It was on this journey that he met with Dororo.
