Adapted from the novel with the same title by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One was a big success. But when will Ready Player Two movie be released?
The novel was released in 2011, while the first movie came out in 2018 by Warner Bros and directed by the one and only Steven Spielberg.
The story set in 2045, when most of people are very dependent on technology, and spend their time in a virtual reality, to hide from the real world.
This follows the story of Wade Watts who spends his time to play a virtual reality realm called OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation). In OASIS, players can choose their own custom Avatar. Wade’s avatar is called Parzival, and he joins an Easter egg challenge by OASIS’ late founder James Halliday.
Parzival, together with his partner player Artemis and other players who call themselves as High Five, try to complete the challenge while also go against Nolan Sorrento, the head of a tech company, IOI.
The first movie earned more than US$580 million. IMDB gives it 7.4 out of 10 scores, while Rotten Tomatoes gives it 72% critics review and 77% audience score.
After the success of the first movie, there are many interests to the sequel, which ignites the discussion of the possibility for Ready Player Two.
The novel of Ready Player Two itself was released on November 24, 2020. So when will it be adapted to the screen?
Ready Player One Ending
But first, let’s do a quick recap on Ready Player One ending.
So at the end of the movie, after Sorrento annihilates all players in the OASIS including himself, Parzival finds out that he has one extra life left, which was given by the Curator. So he finally continues the game and wins.
So he finds Anorak who tells Parzival how it is very important to live the real life, instead of hiding in the OASIS, just like James Halliday. Anorak gives him a key and asks him to sign a statement—which he rejects because he knows it’s just a test.
Anorak then turns into Halliday, and shows Parzival the button to erase OASIS once and for all. Halliday then gives Parzival the Easter egg, so he officially owns the OASIS.
Sorrento, meanwhile, being arrested by the police.
At the end of the movie, Odgen Morrow appears and admits that he is the Curator that gives Parzival the extra life. Odgen Morrow offers Wade the OASIS stocks. Wade then splits the stocks with other members of High Five.
And this movie ends with Wade Watts owning and managing the OASIS.
Ready Player Two: Release Date
The good news is, Ready Player Two has been confirmed, although there is not much information regarding the release date. One thing that we know for sure is that now the movie is on its early stages.
However, the novel writer Ernest Cline admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed some productions. Assuming that the movie process has been started earlier this year, combines with the delays, we can expect Ready Player Two to be out around 2024.
Ready Player Two: How the Story will Go
We can pretty much predict who the story will go from the book which was released in 2020.
So what we can see from the second book of Ready Player Two is, Nolan Sorrento will escape from the prison and most likely will be involved in the new project. Meanwhile, the High Five who stay in various places around the world, finally have to reunite to have another mission and adventure.
There will be some changes of OASIS as well, that makes it more adventurous and addictive. With that, there will also be new quests and riddles, that risk not only Wade’s life but also humanity.
Who will be in Ready Player Two
The main casts most likely will return for Ready Player Two, although it has not been confirmed yet.
If it’s true, then we can expect to see Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, Olivia Cookie as Samantha, Win Morisaki as Toshiro, Philip Zhao as Zhou/Sho, Mark Rylance as James Halliday, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow, Lena Waithe as Helen, and others.
