Sky’s new supernatural thriller, The Rising, explores one woman’s undying determination to upright justice – even if it means having to come back from the dead to do so.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, 2022 is going to be an excellent year.
There’s Keeley Hawes’ dystopian new TV drama The Midwich Cuckoos, Apple TV+ series Uma Thurman’s Suspicion, and BBC’s new thriller about social media obsession, Chloe, all coming soon to our screens.
once a series ends, our appetite for intrigue surely increases. So, it’s great news that we have another upcoming show to add to our watch list: The Rising.
A tale of love, justice, and the cost of pursuing the truth in a world that wants to hide it, the new eight-part supernatural crime thriller from Sky tells the story a woman who is murdered for no reason. But death, it turns out, is only the beginning of the story.
With a talented newcomer cast and a truly strong premise, The Rising looks set to be one of the standout releases of the year. Here’s everything we know so far, including the cast, plot, and release date.
The Rising Release Date
All episodes of The Rising – which is the first series to be produced entirely in-house by Sky Studios – will launch on Sky Max on Friday 11th March 2022 and will also be available on NOW.
The Rising Plot Story
Written by Pete McTighe from The Pact and Charlotte Wolf from The Last Kingdom, the series tells the story of Neve Kelly, a woman who died under suspicious circumstances, but came back to life to direct the investigation of her death.
“Neve Kelly is dead,” reads the official synopsis. “Understandably, she was scared and confused by this new (non) existence, but even more so when she realized she had been killed. she was furious.”
Believing that the killer is someone she knows, Neve sets out to seek justice, taking advantage of her newfound supernatural abilities to “go where the police cannot reach and investigate her own death”. That includes messing up the lives of those she left behind, especially her estranged father, Tom, and her beloved mother, Maria.
“By doing so,” the synopsis adds, “she uncovers a deep-buried secret and is forced to re-examine everything about her life and the people she cares about.”
The Rising Cast: Who’s In It?
‘The Rising’ stars a fresh lineup of young emerging talent including Danish actor Clara Rugaard (I Am Mother), who plays protagonist Neve Kelly.
Nenda Neururer (A Brief History Of Struggle) stars as the irreverent Alex Wyatt, who has recently returned to the area after three years away, while Solly McLeod (Boxing Day) plays Joseph Wyatt, Alex’s cousin and Neve’s longstanding boyfriend.
The ensemble also includes Emily Taaffe (Rare Beasts), Alex Lanipekun (Spooks) and Robyn Cara (Ackley Bridge).
Is There a Trailer For The Rising?
Yes, and it’s a powerful trailer.
In the clip, we see protagonist Neve’s lifeless body underwater before she suddenly emerges from the lake and staggers home, entering just as her mother is calling the police to inform them of her daughter’s disappearance.
However, it soon became clear that her mother could neither see nor hear her. In her frustration, Neve screamed and smashed the vase on the floor, only to find that it was still intact on the shelf.
However, when Neve realized she was dead, she began to take over the story. As the search party went out to search for her body, she stood by the lake where she died, urging them to “come find me”.
We also learn through the haunting voiceover that Neve was brutally murdered.
“Someone drugged me and strangled me with a belt,” she explained. “There’s so much I don’t remember.”
We also see other characters come forward to help with the investigation, including a woman who claims she wants justice and has previously lied to a statement and a man who claims he remembers something important from the night of the fight.
Near the end of the trailer, Neve states that she will reclaim the narrative. “I’m not leaving, not until I find out who did this to me,” she said. “I won’t be someone’s victim.”
