It turns out that in the Death Note story, Light Yagami died after being revealed to be a vigilante and was shot by Matsuda. Ryuk writes Light’s name on the Death Note as he promised in the beginning of the series and Light dies of a heart attack.
Why would someone who wields great power die in the same way as his victims? Here are things you need to know about the death of Light Yagami at the end of Death Note.
In What Episode is Light Yagami Die?
Light dies in episode 37, the final episode titled “New World” that ended the anime series. In the previous episode, Near planned to meet Light with his special task force at a warehouse called the “Yellow Box”.
Spokesman Light Takada died in the fire and once the news broke out, there was a debate on who the next spokesperson would be. As Light approaches the yellow box, he is sure that he has everything well planned. He plans to kill everyone who knows about the notebook.
Light plans that when everyone enters the yellow box, Mikami will bring the real Death Note, peek inside the yellow box, and write down the names of everyone in the room except his name so they will all die.
Light realizes that someone had peeked into the room and had written all the names. So, he tells Mikami to come inside. Mikami was skeptical at first, but he entered the room. Light asks Mikami how many seconds it’s been since he wrote his first name and Mikami says 30 seconds.
It takes 40 seconds for a person to die if their name is written in a book. Mikami starts counting down the remaining 10 seconds and when Mikami reaches 40, Light says to Near “I won”. After 40 seconds have passed, no one dies as Near reveals that he has the real Death Note and the one Mikami has is fake.
Light is surprised that he was deceived and that his cover has been exposed. The whole room is surprised to learn that they are not dead, but Near is not because that was the plan. Near collects Mikami’s fake Death Note and checks to see the names he wrote down. Mikami had written the names of everyone in the room except for Light.
Light is confronted by Near and the special task force as they suspect that Light is Kira due to the absence of his name in the Death Note.
He starts to panic and shout, accusing people of setting him up. But the evidence is strong because the Death Note had been tampered with by Near. Near once worked with Mello and detective L to catch Kira because Near knew that he alone could not catch and reveal Kira’s true identity.
Light starts manically laughing as all the evidence points to him as Kira. Then he finally admits that he is Kira and claims to be the god of the new world. He explains that the world needs Kira to upright justice as he is the only hope for humanity.
He pours out his frustrations, ranting on about how despite his efforts to clean up the world’s criminals, there are still rotten people and his job isn’t done until the whole world is “clean”.
He says that he knows that killing people is a crime but that it is the only way he can clean the world. It was his job to do it and he was the only one who could.
Light begins to hallucinate. he sees his younger self on the day he found the Death Note and passed it on his way home. Then the hallucinations stopped as they entered another warehouse.
Ryuk has been watching Light from the tower. At this point, Light is completely exhausted from running and injured by bullets. Ryuk ended up writing Light’s name on his Death Note as he was about to climb the stairs. Light Yagami has a heart attack and dies.
Why Did Light Yagami Die?
Ryuk writes Light’s name on his Death Note after Light is shot several times. Ryuk tells Light that the name of the person written on the Death Note does not go to heaven or hell.
Light finds it hard to believe that he dies in the same manner his criminal, rotten victims died. Ryuk doesn’t feel remorse after he kills Light. Ryuk just wants to have fun and if Light goes to jail it won’t be as fun, so he kills Light instead.
Ryuk drops the Death Note into the human world out of boredom with his activities. He was looking for things to do and decides to come down to earth to find it. Ryuk’s plan from the start was to kill the person who found the Death Note and unfortunately for Light, he was the first human to put his hand on the notebook. This ensures that without him knowing it, Light was doomed from the start. He takes the Death Note home and finally uncovers the power that the book holds. Light becomes obsessed with the Death Note and its uses.
Light has to die because humans shouldn’t have the power to take lives as they please. The power that the book holds gets to Light’s head, making him commit a series of dangerous mistakes. He ends up having to pay for it with his life.
What Happens to Light Yagami After He Dies?
Ryuk tells Light Yagami early in the series that people who use the Death Note don’t go to heaven or hell.
Therefore, Light Yagami ceases to exist after he died. according to the manga series, after humans die, they go to a place full of nothingness.
The series left us confused about what happens to Light after death but following the manga series’ world building, Light has simply ceased to exist.
