Joker Game is an anime that was released back in 2016 by Production I.G. The studio is most well-known for its work on series such as the famous volleyball series, Haikyuu!!, Psycho-Pass, and Kuroko’s Basketball. The anime aired from April 5 to June 21, 2016 with a total of 12 episodes. The anime is licensed by both Funimation and Crunchyroll. There was also a 2 episode special of the anime, titled Adventure of Black Cat Yoru. The OVA aired after the anime finished airing, from July 27 until September 28, 2016.
The story is adapted from an original series of novels written by Koji Yanagi. The first novel which was published with the title Joker Game. It consists of 5 short stories and was published by Kadokawa Shoten on August 28, 2008. The second novel was released the next year and is titled Double Joker, which consists of 6 stories. The third novel is titled Paradise Lost. It was released in 2012 with a total of 5 stories. The last novel was published in 2015 with the title Last Waltz. The final novel has a total of 4 stories.
The story has also been adapted into a few manga adaptations. Kayoko Shimotsuki wrote 2 manga adaptations based on Joker Game. The first manga is titled D no Maou, which adapts the first novel. It has 3 volumes in total. The second manga only has 1 volume and is based on the 2015 live-action movie adaptation. It is simply titled Joker Game. Subaru Nitou adapted the anime into manga in 2016. The manga is titled Joker Game: The Animation and was published with 5 volumes in total.
Joker Game Season 2 Release Date
The anime was last seen in 2016 and it has been more than five years since then. Unfortunately, there has been no news from Production I.G about any update regarding the possibility of Joker Game Season 2.
There is also a problem with the source material. Koji Yanagi only published 4 novels, and there are only 20 chapters in total. Considering that the anime has 12 episodes and there are already 2 OVAs made based on the source material, it seems like there is not enough material for the animation studio to make Joker Game Season 2. The first season has already concluded the storyline, whilst the other remaining chapters were adapted into the OVA. Therefore, we have to wait until the author decides to make a sequel of the novel in order to see Joker Game Season 2.
The Plot of Joker Game
The story takes place in 1937, just right before the event of World War II. The story revolves around a new spy training organization named “D Agency”. The organization was established by Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki, under the order of the Imperial Japanese Army. There are a total of 8 members who have been selected to join D Agency.
Members of the organization are intelligent individuals who have studied numerous fields and have been trained to survive in extreme conditions. These agents are equipped with manipulation skills which they must use to conduct operations and obtain the information that they need, all for the sake of their nations.
