On the official Twitter account of “The Irregular at Magic High School” it was announced today that the spin-off “The Honor Student at Magic High School” (Jap.: “Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei”) will receive an anime adaptation.
The Mahouka Season 3 staff has not been confirmed. For the second season, movie director Risako Yoshida returned to helm the project. Character designer Kana Ishida and music composer Taku Iwasaki also returned.
Spin-off Anime Starts in 2021
“The Honor Student at Magic High School” is a spin-off manga for the light novel “The Irregular at Magic High School”, which tells the story from the point of view of Miyuki Shiba. The series by Yu Mori was published in eleven volumes from April 2012 to June 2020. A sequel in the form of a “second manga squadron” was only announced today.
The anime series will launch on Japanese television later this year. Concrete details, such as a start date or information about the participants of the production team, are still pending. You can see a first teaser later in the article.
The light novels appeared on Sugoi Japan’s 2015 polls and since 2011, is one of the top selling series in Japan with 10 million copies sold as of 2019. In addition, its manga and anime adaptations also appeared on top selling charts. English reviewers had mixed reception towards the anime adaptation.
The complex technicality of magic within the series was received warmly but the exposition was criticized for being heavy, unclear, and poorly executed. The 26-part first season and the film are already available on DVD and Blu-ray. The second season, which aired in the fall of 2020, ends today at 8:15 p.m. with the 13th episode of aniverse in Simulcast.
