Amazon’s television adaptation of the epic fantasy novel series, The Wheel of Time is scheduled for 2021. Obviously, Amazon does not doubt its success since the series has already been renewed for season 2.
The series is based on the wheel of time series of fantasy novels written by Robert Jordan (pen name of James Oliver Rigney Jr.). The series includes twelve novels, the last of which was completed by Brandon Sanderson after the untimely death of Robert Jordan. FXX has already attempted to adapt the series for television in 2015 with Winter Dragon, a pilot who was stopped in his tracks due to problems with the succession of Robert Jordan.
Amazon’s adaptation, authorized by the estate, is expected to launch in 2021. The network confirmed the release window with a video on social media today, including Instagram and Twitter. The production finished filming in May and has already been chosen for a second season.
The ad says “even legends have an origin”, a new slogan for the series that was not used for books. With its similar marketing, title, and logo, Amazon (Good Omens Season 2) is clearly trying to make the next Game of Thrones with The Wheel of Time. Virtually all streaming and streaming platforms have attempted the same with epic fantasy adaptations of varying quality, but none have yet managed to recreate their success. While the conditions that made Game of Thrones a phenomenon of the spirit of the time are impossible to recreate, the Wheel of Time novels offer a richly detailed world and a wide cast of characters that have the potential to attract viewers.
The Wheel of Time Cast
Rosamund Pike was cast as the show’s lead role, Moiraine Damodred, with a supporting cast including Daniel Henney as Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Barney Harris, and Madeleine Madden. Amazon’s official synopsis for the series can be read below:
The Wheel of Time Plot
The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine, a member of the powerful female organization of channelers (magic-users) called the Aes Sedai, who takes a group of five young people from their home village following an attack by the forces of the Dark One, an evil entity that seeks to destroy the Model (Existence). Of these five people, she thinks one of them could be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a former hero and powerful channeler whose prophecy says he will save the world or destroy it.
