Yuri!! on ICE is a comedy sports anime about figure skating which was released back in 2016. It was animated by the animation studio MAPPA. The studio is also famous for their works on shows such as the highly popular shounen anime, Jujutsu Kaisen, the final season of the Attack on Titan series, Dororo, and Banana Fish.
The series aired on Japanese television from October 6 until December 22, 2016. It has a total of 12 episodes, and the series is licensed by both Funimation and Crunchyroll. There was also a 2-minute special episode that aired on May 26, 2017. It covered the Grand Prix exhibition routine that is performed by Yuri Plisetsky, and is titled Yuri!!! On ICE: Yuri Plisetsky GPF in Barcelona EX “Welcome to The Madness”.
The anime is an original series, meaning it was not adapted from any other media. The series is created through collaboration between Sayo Yamamoto and Mitsurou Kubo, where the former directed and wrote the series whilst the latter wrote the original scripts for the anime. The figure skating was choreographed by a Japanese figure skating choreographer, coach, and former competitive ice dancer, Kenji Miyamoto.
Yuri on Ice Season 2 Release Date
Currently, there has not been any official announcement made by the creator nor studio MAPPA about the fate of Yuri on Ice Season 2. However, the series has won many awards and is highly successful. Therefore, it is highly likely that fans will eventually get Yuri on Ice Season 2. The series not only won Anime of the Year in the 1st Crunchyroll Anime Awards, but also Animation of the Year in the 16th Tokyo Anime Awards and Best Original Series in the Japan Expo Awards.
Although fans are still waiting in the dark regarding Yuri on Ice Season 2, there is currently a Yuri On Ice anime movie in the works, titled Yuri on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence. The teaser for the movie is already out. It was scheduled to be released in 2019 at first, however the release of the movie has been postponed and the status of the release date is currently unknown.
The Plot of Yuri on Ice
The story starts with Yuuri Katsuki, a promising figure skater from Japan that has been recognized by the Japan Skating Federation. However, he was crushed after he lost at the Grand Prix Finale at the age of 23. Feeling distraught, he decided to go back to his hometown in Hasetsu, Kyushu.
However, a video of him performing a routine by his idol, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly went viral. This led to Victor going to Yuuri’s house and declaring himself to be Yuuri’s coach. Yuuri was overwhelmed, but he accepted Victor’s offer. Together with the help of Victor, Yuuri now must try his best to make his way back to the world stage, where he must face many talented figure skaters. One of them being the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, who is determined to defeat Yuuri.
