Air Gear is one of the many old shows that never get old. It was released more than a decade ago, but the fanbase is still going strong up to this point. This fact alone shows how successful Air Gear is in the anime industry. With that being said, by the time of writing, there are many fans who are still demanding Air Gear Season 2.
The anime series Air Gear is a shounen that pursues the action, comedy, ecchi, and sports genres. The show tells us the story of Itsuki Minami, a delinquent in his high school, along with his best friends Kazuma Mikura and Onigiri, as they got dragged into the world of Air Trecks, a motorized and futuristic inline skates that can make them rule the skies.
Air Gear began life as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Oh! Great. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine since November 6, 2002. The manga series ran for 358 chapters collected in 37 tankobon volumes before concluding on May 23, 2012. The English version of the manga was initially licensed by Del Rey Manga before the company’s shut down. Kodansha USA took over and published it under the Kodansha Comics imprint.
Air Gear is one of the most successful manga series that Oh! Great has made, to the point where it can be considered as a relevant piece even up to this very date. As of August 2020, Air Gear had over 18 million copies in circulation. It even won the 31st Kodansha Manga Award for the shounen category in 2006.
Air Gear Season 2 Renewal Status
An anime adaptation of Oh! Great’s successful manga series was produced by Toei Animation, the studio that has already been in the scene since the start of the anime industry, best known for its popular anime releases such as One Piece, Dragon Ball, and last but not least, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The anime series Air Gear was first premiered on April 5, 2006, and ran for twenty-five episodes before concluding on September 27 of the same year. Along the way, there was a special episode entitled Air Gear: Special Trick that was released on March 21. It takes place between episodes 21 and 22 of the main series. On November 17, 2010, Satelight has released a sequel consisting of three ova episodes.
As of now, we haven’t received any words from the author or the studio regarding Air Gear Season 2 ever since its first release. We don’t know whether there will be a season renewal or not, but the show hasn’t been canceled either.
Will Air Gear Season 2 be possible?
It has been over a decade since Toei Animation released the first season of Air Gear, and they haven’t brought up any news regarding the future of the series. That said, Air Gear Season 2 would be highly unlikely.
Although in terms of source material, the studio would have more than enough of them for a season renewal. The first season has only covered the first 104 out of 358 chapters of the manga series. They can even make two more seasons with the remaining material.
However, the fact that Satelight has already made a sequel to the series in the form of OVA episodes made Air Gear Season 2 seem more out of reach. Satelight adapted random parts of the story from the manga ahead of the main anime series’ timeline. The first episode is based on the 16th volume of the manga featuring the fight between Ikki and Ringo, and the second one is based on the 23rd/24th volume of the manga featuring Kogarasumaru vs. Sleeping Forest inside Inorganic Net.
Usually, old shows like this one would be better off receiving a remake/reboot instead of a season renewal. Berserk and Fruits Basket is one of the most known examples out of all. So, all we can do now is hope that any studio would pick up the anime series to produce a reboot of our beloved show.
