Black Lagoon is a famous anime series which was directed by Sunao Katabuchi in the mid 2000s. However, it has been more than 10 years since we last saw the famous action series. Fans have been waiting and are getting impatient about the possibility of Black Lagoon Season 4. This article will go into everything we know about the series and any possibility for a renewal.
The series is adapted into anime by the well-known animation studio Madhouse. It is one of the powerhouses of anime studios and has adapted some of the biggest anime titles out there, like Death Note, the first season of One Punch Man, No Game No Life, and the 2011 version of Hunter X Hunter. The whole anime is licensed by Funimation.
Black Lagoon is adapted from a manga series with the same title, written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe, which began its serialization in 2002. Both the first and the second season were released in 2006 and comprised 13 episodes each. The first season is simply titled Black Lagoon and the second season is titled Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage. There is also a special omake released in 2009, which consists of comedy shorts.
The OVA, or what the fans called as the third season, was released 4 years after that. It is titled Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail and ran for almost a year, airing from June 27, 2010 to June 22, 2011 with a total of 5 episodes. Unlike the standard anime episodes, the OVA has a longer duration, around 33 minutes per episode. Whilst the first 2 seasons premiered on television, the third was simply released in video format.
Black Lagoon Season 4 Release Date
As it has been previously mentioned, it has been more than a decade since the last season of Black Lagoon was released. Some fans have begun to be skeptical that they will ever get Black Lagoon Season 4. The main problem is with the source material. The first three seasons have already covered 9 out of the 11 released volumes of the manga, which means there are not enough volumes for the studio to make into Black Lagoon Season 4.
The good news is that currently, the manga is still ongoing. The author took a lot of breaks which lead to the manga having plenty of hiatuses. However, the manga has now resumed its publication. Therefore, there should be more material for Madhouse to work with in case they ever choose to pick the series back up.
The Plot of Black Lagoon
The story mainly focuses on our main character, a Japanese businessman named Rokuro Okajima, or more commonly called Rock. After an incident which involved his company with a pirate mercenary group called Black Lagoon, he decided to abandon his life as a salaryman and joined the group. The majority of the story is set in the fictional city named Roanapur in Thailand, the base of operation for the mercenary group.
Other than him, the group has 3 other members. Dutch, the leader and a former US Navy captain, the gunslinger Revy who is also famously known as Two-Hands, and the electronics specialist and navigator, Benny. Rock now has to adapt to his new life in a city full of mercenaries and mafias where he performed jobs alongside the other members of The Lagoon Company.
