Set in New York City, ‘Younger‘ revolves around Liza, a divorced single mother in her forties who is taken for a 26-year-old woman. This marks a new beginning because she uses this misunderstanding to her advantage and revives her personal and professional life. The series is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Pamela Redmond Satran. Created by Darren Star, the comedy-drama series was originally released on March 31, 2015 on TV Land. The show went on Paramount+ for its seventh season.
The critically acclaimed show has received a lot of love for various reasons, but the main one is the charming performance of Sutton Foster (Liza Miller). Often presented as a romantic comedy, viewers loved the playful pace and lightness of the plots, which are tinged with feminism. The series was also appreciated for its insight into the culture of the time, as it explores topics such as age, sexuality and identity without complex. The series is aimed at a wide audience, with Millennials being able to identify with it as much as Generation X. Naturally, you must be eager to know if the series will return for Younger Season 8. So, here’s everything we’ve put together!
Will There Be A Younger Season 8?
Season 7 of ‘Younger’ was released on April 15, 2021 on Paramount+ (‘Yellowstone, Paranormal Activity 7‘), with the season ending after 12 episodes on June 10, 2021. Each episode has a duration of 20 to 31 minutes.
As for the Younger Season 8, here’s what we know. On July 24, 2019, the series received the green light for a season 7, making it TV Land’s oldest original series. However, in late February 2021, Season 7 was officially announced as the final release of the series. In September 2020, the show’s creator, Darren Star, had stated that he had already planned that the seventh season would be the show’s swan song. He wanted to make sure that the drama ended on a satisfactory note and that viewers got the answers to any questions they might have.
Since no particular reason was given to explain the end of the show, it can be assumed that the plot had reached an organic conclusion. ‘Younger’ has always been very successful on TV Land. It is therefore logical that it stops while it is still at the top, instead of sinking into darkness. Some sources also questioned whether the outbreak of the pandemic had not played a role in this decision. As was the case for most film and television productions in 2020, the filming process had to undergo massive changes due to the new protocols dictated by COVID-19 that had to be followed. Naturally, this posed many obstacles for Younger as well.
Season 7 was filmed outdoors as much as possible so that actors and crew members could maintain the recommended physical distance. Besides the fact that the team had to brave the cold, the planning was a major problem. For this reason, we don’t see much of Miriam Shor’s Diana Trout and Charles Michael Davis’ Zane Anders in the final season. Star also revealed that the scripts had to be reworked as they were written before the pandemic hit.
Although there was talk of whether or not to incorporate COVID-19 into the plot of the series, the team decided not to do so. Star told the Hollywood Reporter in April 2021: ‘Younger’ is timeless. This is a series that you will be able to watch in years. And COVID, for me, marks it instantly. He added: Ironically, this last season has become the most beautiful, the greatest season in terms of production values, and it’s really due to the incredible team, our directors, and the way they were able to achieve the beautiful COVID-free Manhattan that you’re seeing on the streets this season. For me, it’s a dream of what I hope New York will look like again soon.
Update: Younger Spinoff Canceled Darren Star Says
the spinoff which was first reported in May 2020 was never officially a done deal. And with Duff now set to star in How I Met Your Father, which received a straight-to-series order from Hulu (Mr. Mayor) earlier this year, the timing certainly doesn’t seem right.
However, Star insisted that COVID-19 had no role to play in the decision to end the series. Considering all the factors mentioned above, it is very unlikely that Younger Season 8 will ever be realized. Even if all good things have an end, it can also mean the beginning of something new. Fans will be delighted to learn that Younger could expand his universe by adding to his kingdom a spin-off series led by Kelsey Peter. While fans have been promised a satisfying ending for the mother series, the series finale will serve as the basis for the new series that will follow the character of Hilary Duff.
On April 9, 2021, Variety reported that the series is in its early development phase as conversations are in full swing. Star shared the basic idea behind the spin-off series and said: It would be a totally new universe. The best way to describe it is to say that it would be a bit of a female ‘Entourage’ with Kelsey as the main character. Since Kelsey would follow another dream, younger’s other characters would probably not be part of the series. So if the series officially starts, fans have a new adventure to look forward to.
