Last year we reported that Misaki no Mayoiga Receives An Anime Adaptation. Now the official website of the anime adaptation of “Misaki no Mayoiga” announced that the film will be shown in Japanese cinemas from 27 August 2021. In addition, a new teaser has been released, which you can watch below.
Misaki no Mayoiga Anime is created by David Production
The film is produced under the direction of director Shinya Kawatsura (Non Non Biyori) at Studio David Production (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden) writes the script, while Kamogawa (Chikatetsu ni Noru) contributes the character design and Yuri Miyauchi composes the music. Aniplex takes over sales.
The main role of the protagonist Yui will be Mana Ashida, who previously spoke Ruka in “Children of the Sea” and Annie in “Magic Tree House”. She also appeared as Rin in the live-action adaptation of “Usagi Drop”. Takuya Tasso, the governor of Iwate Prefecture, has a cameo as Kozuchikawa, one of the many kappas in the film.
“Misaki no Mayoiga” is one of three anime (Kiss Him Not Me Season 2) productions created as part of the “Zutto Ouen Project 2011+10” on the 10th anniversary of the Touhoku earthquake of 2011. The other two works are “Backflip!” and “Hula Fulla Dance”.
The anime film is based on a novel written by Sachiko Kashiwaba and published in Japan by Kodansha in 2015. It is set in the disaster area and was awarded the Noma Children’s Literature Prize in 2016.

17-year-old Moeka, who lost her parents, and Yurie, who tried to escape her violent husband, got off at a train station in Kitsunezaki one day. The great earthquake and tsunami had changed their fate. Their lives were saved, but they were baffled when they were asked about their identities at an evacuation site.
An old woman named Kiwa Yamana helped them. From that day on, Yurie was known as Yui and Moeka as Hiyori, and together with Kiwa, the three women began a wonderful community life in the old house “Mayoiga” overlooking the sea.
