Banana Fish Season 2: Is There A Possibility For A Sequel?

Banana Fish is originally a manga series that was first published on April 13, 1985 until March 12, 1994. It was serialized in Betsucomi and is written by Akimi Yoshida. It later got adapted into an anime by MAPPA and began airing on July 6, 2018, after more than 20 years. The first season has a total of 24 episodes. It has now been almost 3 years since the series ended and some fans began questioning: will we ever get Banana Fish Season 2? 

The first season animation was done beautifully by MAPPA, the same studio that animated massive anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Kakegurui, and the final season of Attack on Titan. Not to mention it also has great soundtracks and themes. Seeing that it has a 8.15 rating on MyAnimeList, we can see that the first season received many positive reviews.

Banana Fish Season 2 Release Date

Currently, there is no official announcement for Banana Fish Season 2 from studio MAPPA, nor the producers. The manga series is already finished and there is also no news for a continuation from the author. Since the anime is a direct adaptation from the manga, therefore it seems like there is not enough materials for the new season. 

The manga has a total of 19 volumes and MAPPA adapted the entire story into 24 episodes. Although the anime did not adapt the entire storyline of the manga, the story was already concluded by the end of episode 24. Because of this, many fans are skeptical whether we will have a new season or not. 

There are extra chapters which tell the story of Eiji and Sing after the end of Banana Fish, titled Garden of Words. However, considering the length of the side story, there is not enough material to turn it into Banana Fish Season 2. It is more probable that it might be adapted as special episodes instead.

We are still waiting for MAPPA to make any announcement. Considering that the animation studio is currently busy working on series such as Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 and Chainsaw Man as their upcoming projects, fans might have to wait longer for any news regarding the possibility of Banana Fish Season 2.

The Plot of Banana Fish

Banana Fish is a crime thriller anime that takes place in America, which tells the story of Aslan Jade Callenreese, or more well known as Ash Lynx. Despite being only 17 years old, Ash is a leader of a street gang of children in New York City. When he was a child, he was a runaway until an infamous godfather of the mafia, Dino Golzine, picked him off the streets and decided to raise him.

The story started when Ash’s older brother, Griffin Callenreese, went mad one night and shot his squad when they were serving the US Army during the Iraq War. From then on, he became mentally handicapped and lived in New York City under the care of Ash. From time to time, he would repeatedly mutter “Banana Fish”. This led Ash to investigate the mysterious “Banana Fish”. 

In the midst of this, Ash was introduced to Shunichi Ibe and Eiji Okumura, Japanese photographers who came to New York City to report on American street gangs. However, soon after their meeting, Eiji got kidnapped by Dino’s men. Their adventure starts as Ash tries to save Eiji from the mafia.
